SAVANNAH, Ga., July 7, 2008 – For Raquel Matos, necessity was truly the mother of invention. Like all parents, when she had her daughter, Rosana, three years ago, her life changed as did her daily schedule.
"What I wasn't prepared for", Matos muses, "...was the fact that as my child grew into a toddler, she had her own idea of schedule. I was exhausted, like most moms are, fighting to get my 3-year old to brush teeth, take a bath, go to bed". I thought, 'I've got to get her into a routine for my own sanity'" she laughs.
Easier said than done. But Matos developed a series of pictures, stories and visual designs for Rosana that were fun and appealing, going through the same daily routine that small children do. It was a huge success and Matos noticed an immediate change in Rosana's behavior – she began showing signs of more self-confidence and took ownership and responsibility of her new routine.
Today, Matos is the co-founder of a new Savannah-based company, Milestone Parenting, which is generating buzz from parents, caregivers, educators and child development professionals alike. Milestone Parenting produces Daily Routine and Bedtime Routine Kits featuring an animated fox character, KC the Fox, with easy-to-use tools that teach children good habits for a lifetime. The kits include one colorful personalized poster, a set of related activity stickers, an erasable marker and a quick-start guide that shows parents how to get started in a few easy steps. Stickers can be applied and reapplied to the poster as many times as necessary. The included erasable marker allows activity times to be changed as a family's needs change.
Matos admits she and her partners never could have gotten the company off the ground without the help of others such as John Nunnemacher, the artist who develop KC the Fox, as well as a huge dose of support from Savannah-based business, Kennickell Print and Global Marketing, which came up with the innovative and viable solution for printing and distributing the adhesive calendar-style kits. "We do a lot of work with Kodak and their graphic solutions", said Al Kennickell, President. "This product has a lot of printing elements to it and it is produced on their Kodak NexPress. With the equipment and our fulfillment, it was an easy solution in our minds."
The final product has been well received. "It's not easy for parents as small children grow, begin to develop and get a sense of their own independence" said Dr. Rebeca Matos, a child development educator and sister of Raquel. "What Milestone is doing is taking the tantrums and the belligerent "No!" out of small children. KC the Fox actually helps prepare the children for life – certainly for kindergarten and the early grades – through its fun and loving discipline approach".
"It's just getting the word out" said Raquel Matos, whose company has launched a web site (www.milestoneparenting.com) and is ramping up marketing efforts now.
"Raquel has a tremendous idea and we were just happy to show her some unique materials for what she wanted to do and the logistics of how it could be done" said Kennickell.
