Bedtime and Daily Routine Kit Instruction Guide
Welcome to Your
It's Time To...
Routine
Congratulations! You have taken an exciting step along a proven and practical path for establishing healthy routines and improving the lives of both you and your child.
It's Time To... Routines were created by the child development experts at Milestone Parenting as a practical way for parents, teachers and caregivers to introduce routines to their children.
Because they are based on easily-recognizable images, It's Time To... Routines will make learning routines fun, easy and non-threatening for your child.
You will be amazed at how quickly your child takes ownership of their routine. They will soon be telling you that It's Time To... go to bed, brush teeth or take a bath.
Step 1: Find the Best Spot
Choose an easily-accessible spot in your home that is at your child's eye level. Make sure there is a clock nearby.
(We recommend placing the poster in your child’s room to promote ownership of their routine).
Click here to read our recommendations for choosing and preparing a spot for your poster.
Helpful Hint:
Children love surprises! Hang the poster while your child is away. Choosing the right moment to unveil the surprise to them will help give the poster special meaning.
Step 2: Hang the Poster
Completely remove the poster's backing, starting from a corner or one of the scored locations. With your thumbs and forefingers on each upper corner, carefully align and apply the poster to the surface. Firmly press the poster to the surface, rubbing away any "bubbles" that may appear. The poster can be removed or repositioned at any time.
Helpful Hint:
Use the white shipping tube as an application roller. After wiping down the tube, firmly role it up and down the poster several times for best adhesion.
Step 3: Apply the Stickers
Select the activity stickers you wish to use and lay them out in sequence. Peel the backing from your first activity sticker and apply it to the box labeled "1" on the poster. Continue applying stickers to the poster in order, using the numbered boxes on the poster as a guide (2, 3, 4, ...). The activity stickers can be removed and repositioned at any time.
Helpful Hint:
Start out with 3 to 5 activities. This will help prevent your child from becoming overwhelmed. Add more stickers to the routine when you feel your child is ready.
Step 4: Introduce the Routine to Your Child
Show your child each picture and help them identify the various activities. Using the erasable marker, draw the hands on the clock, explaining that when the hands on the picture match the hands on the real clock,
It's Time To...
do that activity. Filling in the digital clock will help adult caregivers, and it will also help prepare your child for telling time.
Use a damp cloth to change the times on the stickers as your child’s routine grows.
Helpful Hint:
If you remove a sticker, simply place it on wax paper for later use.
